2D ultrasound
is the traditional black and white image that comes to mind when you say “baby ultrasound”.  2D is a flat, black-and-white image. 

3D and 4D ultrasound scans
let you see the baby in three-dimensional images.

3D technology 
gives you a life-like view of your baby.  Think of those cute baby images where you can see the actual shape of the baby’s face.  “Her nose looks just like her dad’s”.  

4D is simply 3D with the addition of real time.
While the ultrasound is being performed you can watch your baby LIVE - the real time is considered the 4th dimension.
